hinemoana solo

Hinemoana is a flexible and adaptable act / performer, accustomed to a wide range of venues and audiences. However, her strongest appeal seems to be in an 'in concert' setting, with a listening audience, whether it be an intimate cafe/restaurant, a theatre, or on a marae. She performs for a minimum of 40 minutes and a maximum of 2 hours. She travels with her own sound engineer.

Her basic requirements, for solo performances or the full show, are listed in the technical rider below.

duo: taniwha - hinemoana baker and christine white

Christine White at The Mussel Inn              Taniwha - Hinemoana Baker and Christine White              Taniwha performing at WOMAD Taranaki 09

Onekaka, Golden Bay

Hinemoana is often accompanied wih her own material on guitar, vocals, looping pedal and wow factor by her partner, composer, singer-songwriter and sonic artist Christine White. Those who've enjoyed Christine's gigs in Auckland and the rest of New Zealand over the last 20 years will testify that Christine's live performances have to be seen to be believed. An accomplished composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, Christine has also been honing her production and recording skills: she has three albums to her name (most recently 'Pirouette'), plus a long list of composing credits for other artists and organisations.

'...with vocal power, presence and songs others would kill for...'
         (New Zealand Herald)

'...cut from the same cloth as any of Neil Finn's best...'
         (New Zealand Musician magazine)

Christine moved to Wellington in 2005,  and her
well-deserved reputation is already growing at this end of the island. She performs live at various Wellington and Kapiti venues, among them Bar Bodega and Katipo Cafe in Wellington, and Lembas Cafe in Raumati South.  She toured nationwide in 2005 to celebrate the launch of 'Pirouette', and more recently to Nelson and Golden Bay.

Christine's current passion is her degree in Sonic Arts and New Music (think John Cage, Laurie Anderson, David Downes, John Cousins). Christine won the New Zealand School of Music Composer's Competition 2008, and has just completed a qualificiation in sonic arts through Victoria University. Her enthusiasm for new music has led her to building a new, melodic percussion instrument using an old Black and Decker workbench and some contact microphones. The onstage effect can be anything from eerie hums and haunting whistles to funky, industrial beats and metallic tick-tocking. As usual, Christine and her instruments make a huge and impressive impact on audiences - she is, musically at least, always much larger than the sum of her parts!

The two also perform as a duo called 'Taniwha'.

taniwha – rhythm, rhyme and recycling

Taniwha is a Paekakariki phenomenon, a duo making sweet music with anything and everything they have to hand. As singer-songwriters in a folk/pop tradition, their guitars and beautifully woven voices are still their mainstay. But as all artists do, they've been experimenting. Many of their recent instruments have been acquired from Trash Palace, their local recycling station in Tawa. They are particularly thrilled to have acquired their Casiotone keyboard for $1.00, and their cheese grater, oven grills and steel wine rack for free.

And what use would musicians have for sundry kitchen utensils on stage? Well…The real taniwha in the band is an instrument Christine has built out of a Black & Decker WorkMate (Registered Trade Mark). The ambient sounds you hear in ‘Day After' and ‘Dumb White Girl’ are produced by this fabulous monster, inspired by sonic artist Eric Leonardson’s ‘Springboard’, which is made out of a modified zimmer frame.

'Multi-media Maori Cabaret ' ~ the poetry and music of Hinemoana Baker, the sound and vision of Andrew Dalziel

"It was a shock walking into the Boathouse to find it looking more like an upmarket e-mail cafe, with table-top screens dotted around the room, set up for Dalziel's eclectic image collection... Hinemoana began the show with a set of Maori songs, introduced in her usual uniquely elegant style....Richard Nunns [played] some of his collection of ancient indigenous instruments. The haunting whistles and eerie thrums added the perfect atmosphere..."

- Maia Freeman, Nelson Evening Mail, 25/10/05

Hinemoana's Multi Media maori Cabaret at the Le Cafe, Blenheim, 2006

Musician and poet Hinemoana Baker, a graduate of Victoria University's Masters programme in Creative Writing, sound artist, producer and raconteur, along with sound and vision guru Andrew Dalziel, enjoyed a hugely successful 'May Music Month 05' tour and many subsequent Festival appearances. Their mixed-media show combines poems from Baker's newly published 'matuhi | needle' (co-published by 'Rings' star Viggo Mortensen) and music from her debut album, 'puawai', with Dalziel's punchy, pithy, passionate photography. The show drew rave reviews from Oamaru to Titirangi (and yes, everywhere in between!)

"Her effortless talent mixed her Maori and European heritage in an unusual mixed-media ensemble - an eclectic mix of sight and sound...This was an utterly spell-binding performance."

- Caitlin McKay, Oamaru Mail, May 2005

Hinemoana with Richard Nunns, Nelson Arts Festival, 2006

Hinemoana Baker and Andrew Dalziel are both expert story-tellers in their own right, with text, voice, camera, comedy, breath. Their 'aural-visual' cabaret combo is proving a unique and popular vehicle for those stories. It offers a variety of koauau, colour and korero and of course, that voice...

"Baker, a finalist in last year's Tui music awards for [her album] 'puawai', is often compared with Joni Mitchell, but those good, strong Maori genes add a warmth and richness to the voice, especially in concert...There's the quirk factor, too, sparking off a lively intelligence, sense of fun, enjoyment of the possibilities of words...and surely no-one anywhere is doing what Baker does on stage with a scuba tank, a bucket of water and a looping pedal. Rather than a concert in the traditional sense, there are touches of theatre, poetry and story-telling woven in amongst fabulous songs and lyrics... Profound, and totally New Zealand."

- Alan Clarke, Nelson Evening Mail, May 2005
