fantastic poets lined up for 2014.

"This month – Sunday 30 March – we're delighted to host Hinemoana Baker as our guest. She too is a Kapiti local, and an accomplished musician, singer, composer and recording artist as well as a poet. She’s also an inspiring teacher of creative writing (some of us have experienced that first hand). She has the Writer’s Fellowship at Victoria University this year, and we hear she hasn’t wasted a minute in getting herself immersed in her work. She’s already published several volumes of poetry, and she’s rapidly closing on completing the next one.

She has a great website (http://www.hinemoana.co.nz/) that you can go to for more about her, her work and what she’s up to – well presented, easy to navigate and informative.

We can expect a wonderful session with Hinemoana. With the versatility of her spoken and sung material, and her ease with theheritage of Māori and the other admixtures of New Zealand culture, she covers a wide range of content and style. Something to inspire everyone here.

Of course, it’s your turn to shine in the open mic beforehand. Please keep writing and practising your poems, we get so many comments from our guest poets about their enjoyment of our open mic. If you haven't read or recited publicly and want to give it a go, our group at Valhalla is a supportive venue for exactly that. We’ve all been there!! Feel free to bring along your friends to enjoy the afternoon and support you.

See you at Valhalla on 30 March (entry $5). We're always grateful to our host Karen and her staff for their help and hospitality. Remember, you can stay on to dine with friends afterwards. (Bookings are appreciated, phone 04-905 2010.)
