Poetry in Motion presents Luka Lesson, Australian Slam Champion
Te Whanga-nui-a-Tara welcomes the current Australian Poetry Slam champion Luka Lesson in a special one-off PIM show, with Hinemoana and Laurent Dunningham in support.
Luka is co-director of The Centre for Poetics and Justice and has been active in community development work, utilising hip-hop and poetry as a form of self-determination and raising awareness for marginalised young people for many years. He has taught Indigenous Studies at Monash University for the past two years and holds a first class honours degree in the same field.In support will be Hinemoana Baker, fresh back home from a poetry junket to New York and Laurent Dunningham, a Kiwi currently making ripples on the spoken word scene over in Melbourne.
Laurent has travelled the globe teaching and performing HipHop in Tokyo, Los Angeles, Chicago, Los Vegas, NYC and throughout Australia and New Zealand. After moving to Melbourne in 2010, she continued to teach dance as well as moving more into her her performance poetry calling after being a writer for the last 6 years and performing in Australia, New Zealand and the USA. She has been a finalist in the Melbourne Overload Poetry Slam and the Victorian State Final of the Australian National Poetry Slam.
There will also be an open mic portion to kick off the show. It's first in first served for the open mic, so make sure you get there early if you want to read.
